Haitian Art and Visual Culture

Welcome

Welcome to the LibGuide for Haitian Art and Visual Culture! Here is a centralized collection of resources on Haitian art history. As part of the Haitian Art Digital Crossroads project, this LibGuide is part of an ongoing effort to create a digital "lakou" (communal space) to create a virtual communal network for the discussion and analysis of Haitian art and visual culture.

The Lakou

"Lakou" is a Kreyol term that historically refers to both a clustering of homes around a courtyard space as well as the families that inhabited the lakou. The people who lived in the lakou worked together to provide for each other. By framing methods of data integration and visualization through indigenous standards, the HADC hopes to create a digital environment for the study of Haitian art and visual culture that combats historical and archival silences.

The LibGuide

When students in the first iteration of Haitian Art and Visual Culture began to work on their final projects for the class, they found that they were all experiencing a similar issue—it was very difficult to find and access scholarship on Haitian art. This LibGuide was made in order to act as a central resource to link students to the research tools they needed to learn more about Haitian art and Haitian art history.
