Medical Literature: Methodology Matters

What are Clinical Guidelines?

You can think of clinical practice guidelines as floating above the pyramid of evidence in that they draw from the primary research literature. Guidelines provide a "summary of the body of evidence at a topic level (not limited to a question, intervention, or outcome), often with actionable recommendations for clinical decision making."
-Guyatt, Rennie, D., Meade, M., & Cook, D. (2015). Users’ guides to the medical literature: a manual for evidence-based clinical practice (3rd ed.). McGraw-Hill Medical. pp. 32-

How to Find Clinical Guidelines

Clinical practice guidelines are often published in medical journals and organization websites, so there is no one place to look. Many health sciences databases allow you to filter your results to show only guidelines, so reach out to a librarian if you would like assistance.
